Baku: The rapidly evolving fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are creating new domains of scientific exploration, among which computational social science stands out. This innovative area merges technology with social sciences, offering fresh perspectives on societal issues.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Ilkin Mehrabov, a senior lecturer in computational social sciences at Lund University, recently discussed his academic journey and research endeavors. Mehrabov's work focuses on strategic digital communication, algorithmic propaganda, and AI in education. His diverse academic background, which began at Middle East Technical University, ultimately led him to Lund University, where he integrates engineering with media and communication theories.
Mehrabov's current research includes algorithmic propaganda, countering disinformation, and educational innovations using AI, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). He has developed significant educational programs, including a massive open online course (MOOC) on AI Literacy, aimed at equipping learners with essential AI skills.
Mehrabov explains that computational social science combines social theories and computer science methods, utilizing tools like network analysis and big data to study social phenomena within digital environments. Its applications span politics, media, economics, healthcare, and education, where it helps analyze behaviors and predict trends.
Comparing digital research opportunities in Azerbaijan with Europe, Mehrabov highlights the enthusiasm of Azerbaijani youth for modern technologies. He stresses the importance of international collaboration and infrastructure development to enhance the country's research capabilities. Azerbaijan's Digital Development Concept aligns with his research goals, fostering potential collaborations between Azerbaijani and Swedish institutions.
Mehrabov advises Azerbaijani students and researchers to adopt an interdisciplinary approach, learn foreign languages, and embrace emerging technologies to succeed in computational social science. He emphasizes the importance of curiosity and lifelong learning in this rapidly advancing field.
