Ankara: H.E. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Secretary-General of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8), visited Ankara from 15 to 17 June 2026 to join the 51st Session of the D-8 Commission and events marking the 29th Anniversary of D-8's establishment.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the 51st Session, hosted by the Republic of Trkiye under Egypt's chairmanship, gathered Commissioners and senior representatives from D-8 Member States. The session aimed to evaluate the progress since the last meeting and set the future course for the Organization.
The Commission reviewed a detailed report by the Secretary-General on the Secretariat's activities in early 2026, noting advances in international partnerships, sectoral cooperation, and initiatives in areas like trade, energy, and agriculture. Discussions also covered preparations for the 12th D-8 Summit in Jakarta, reform measures, and the implementation of the D-8 Decennial Roadmap 2020-2030. The ratification of the D-8 Preferential Trade Agreement and Dispute Settlement Mechanism by Egypt was highlighted as a crucial step for economic integration.
A reception commemorating the 29th Anniversary of D-8, hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was a significant highlight. The event, attended by various dignitaries, featured a message from H.E. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and remarks by Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, who honored the late Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan's visionary leadership.
Ambassador Mahmood emphasized the D-8's strategic importance in a complex global landscape and its role in promoting South-South cooperation and sustainable development. He noted recent achievements, including Azerbaijan's accession as the ninth Member State and the establishment of several D-8 centers in Azerbaijan.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the Secretariat's commitment to collaborate with Member States for a stronger D-8, aiming to deliver benefits to its peoples and contribute to global peace and prosperity.
During his visit, Ambassador Mahmood engaged in consultations with Turkish officials, including H.E. Fuat Oktay and Mr. Abdullah Eren, focusing on regional developments and strengthening economic cooperation. He also discussed SME support and innovation with Mr. Ahmet Serdar Ibrahimcioglu, exploring opportunities for capacity-building and regional integration.
The 51st Session and the Secretary-General's meetings in Ankara were pivotal in advancing D-8's agenda and fostering cooperation in development and economic growth across the region.
