Deputy Minister Highlights Importance of Early Warning Systems for Climate Resilience

Baku: Azerbaijan is confronting numerous environmental challenges and climate-related risks. Developing urban infrastructure that is capable of withstanding climate hazards and disasters is crucial for enhancing climate resilience, a goal achievable through the implementation of Early Warning Systems. This was articulated by Umayra Taghiyeva, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, during an event organized by the Ministry on the theme 'Early Warning and Climate-Resilient Cities,' as part of the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13).

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stresses the increasing threats faced by urban areas, including heatwaves, floods, sea-level rise, water scarcity, and infrastructure damage. Taghiyeva emphasized that timely and reliable early warnings play a crucial role in significantly reducing casualties and losses, ultimately preventing environmental disasters. She highlighted that hazard monitoring and forecasting should be considered indispensable, characterizing them as life-saving investments rather than optional measures.
