Baku:The fate of missing persons relies heavily on the cooperative efforts of relevant authorities, stated Gian Luca Beruto, Secretary General of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law. His remarks were made at the Fourth International Conference held as part of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, Beruto highlighted the importance of adhering to and enforcing legal standards in cases of missing persons. He referenced the Geneva Convention, emphasizing that sharing information is a legal obligation for states. Beruto also noted the responsibility held by relevant authorities in the detention of prisoners and hostages.
Beruto further stressed that addressing the issue of missing persons involves taking measures before, during, and after a disappearance. He underscored that international humanitarian law guarantees families the right to know the fate of their relatives.
The significance of holding the conference in Azerbaijan was also highlighted by the representative. Such gatherings are crucial for examining legal frameworks, integrating national and international perspectives, and enhancing cooperation in preventing disappearances and locating missing persons.
