Baku: The Electronic Security Service (National CERT) is conducting investigations into a recent surge in unauthorized account seizures on messaging platforms Telegram and WhatsApp, as disclosed by the ESS to APA-Economics. The service is addressing the issue by encouraging users to implement enhanced security measures.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the analyses and applications received regarding these incidents indicate that many users fail to employ additional security features. Users are advised to enable two-step verification on their Telegram and WhatsApp accounts to bolster security.
To activate two-step verification on Telegram, users must navigate to the "Settings" section, select "Privacy and Security," then proceed to "Two-step verification." This involves setting an additional password and providing an email address for recovery. Consequently, account access is secured not only through SMS but also via an OTP code sent through alternative channels, which diminishes the risk of unauthorized access.
For WhatsApp, users should access the 'Account' section from 'Settings' and select 'Two-step verification.' Here, a six-digit PIN code is established, and it is recommended to add an email address for enhanced security. The PIN code is periodically requested to ensure ongoing account protection.
The Electronic Security Service is actively engaged in discussions with official representatives from both applications to address and resolve these security concerns.
