EU Council Delegation Visits Azerbaijan’s Aghdam District to Assess Mine Clearance Efforts

Aghdam:A delegation from the EU Council Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia visited the Aghdam district in Azerbaijan on October 2 to observe mine clearance operations.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the delegation was updated about the ongoing mine clearance activities in the Sarijali village by employees of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan ANAMA). The delegation learned about the extent of landmine contamination attributed to Armenia and observed the demining process in one of the most heavily contaminated areas in the region.

The delegation also met with Emin Huseynov, Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Khojavend districts. Huseynov briefed the delegation on the extensive restoration and reconstruction initiatives underway in the liberated territories.

During their visit, the delegation watched a video presentation illustrating the rapid changes and development in these areas. Additionally, a representative from the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons reported on the commission's activities. This included discovering mass graves and ongoing investigations into the fate of missing Azerbaijanis.

The visit also included trips to the cities of Shusha and Khankendi, as part of the EU Council delegation's itinerary.
