European Union’s Growing Interest in Azerbaijan Highlighted by German Ambassador

Baku: The European Union's interest in Azerbaijan has seen a significant increase in recent years, particularly concerning energy security, according to German Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Ralf Horlemann. Speaking at a press conference marking the completion of his term, Horlemann emphasized the EU's commitment to fostering robust relations with Azerbaijan.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, strong bilateral ties have been observed over the past year, with notable visits such as that of the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, to Azerbaijan in March. Additionally, EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, also visited the country. The two parties are currently negotiating a new cooperation agreement, marking positive developments in their relationship and underscoring the EU's intensified interest in the region.

Horlemann discussed collaborative efforts in the reconstruction project of the railway in Nakhchivan, a critical element of the Middle Corridor. He pointed out that expanding these connections aligns with Germany's interests.

Reflecting on his time in Azerbaijan, Horlemann praised the hospitality of the Azerbaijani people, noting frequent interactions with German speakers across various regions, from Guba to the Absheron Peninsula. He acknowledged the friendly disposition of the locals towards Germany.

The ambassador also addressed the evolving peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He expressed optimism about the gradual progress towards peace, despite the absence of a finalized agreement, and shared his personal experiences advocating for peace during his tenure. Horlemann concluded by expressing hope for continued advancement on the path to peace, with open borders and free trade, which he believes will bring new opportunities to the region.
