Executive Director Declares June 1984 Events as Genocide Against Sikhs

Amritsar: The June 1984 events constituted genocide against Sikhs, Dabinderjit Singh Sidhu, Executive Director of the Sikh Federation UK, said during his speech at the international conference titled 'June 1984, Amritsar Events: India's Transnational Repression Against Ethnic Minorities in the Context of Genocide', dedicated to the Indian government's repressive policy against ethnic minorities, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Sidhu highlighted that under the 1948 UN Genocide Convention, genocide includes deliberate acts aimed at the total or partial destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. He asserted that Sikhs fall under the category of a protected group as defined by the convention, and thus, the events of June 1984 should be scrutinized for legal accountability under this framework.

Sidhu further explained that proving allegations of genocide requires demonstrating intent aimed at the destruction of a specific group. He underscored the necessity of examining various facts and evidence to substantiate such claims.

Additionally, Sidhu pointed out that despite India's non-acceptance of the International Criminal Court's jurisdiction, there are legal mechanisms within the national legislation of countries that are parties to the Genocide Convention to investigate these alleged crimes.
