Baku: Anti-Azerbaijani sentiment in the French press has intensified as Baku prepares to host the upcoming COP29 climate conference, with accusations of bias and hypocrisy surfacing in the discourse. According to Trend News Agency, Jean-Michel Brun, editor-in-chief of La Gazette du Caucase, has criticized the predominant narrative in French media surrounding Azerbaijan's role as the host of COP29. In a recent article, Brun discusses the global support for Azerbaijan, noting endorsements from the UK, Germany, and the OSCE, among others. Despite this, French media, influenced by a small number of political and diaspora groups, has continued to express skepticism and opposition. Brun highlights that major French outlets, perceived as biased and untrustworthy by their own audience, are vigorously attempting to undermine the COP29 event in Baku. These media sources question Azerbaijan's commitment to climate issues due to its oil production, yet ignore similar circumstances in other countries. Additionally, Brun accuses these outlets of using the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict to paint Azerbaijan in a negative light unjustly. The article also mentions increased travel warnings from France to Azerbaijan, citing "arbitrary detentions," which adds to the strained relations ahead of the conference. Despite this, Brun remains optimistic about the shift in media consumption trends in France, where the younger generation is turning away from traditional media towards more independent and digital sources of news.
