Fuzuli:Today marks the sixth anniversary of the liberation of Fuzuli city from occupation. The city was freed as a result of a counteroffensive launched by the Azerbaijani Army on September 27, 2020, culminating in its liberation on October 17, 2020.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Azerbaijani Army's efforts led to the liberation of several villages in the Fuzuli district as well. The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, announced the liberation of both the city and the villages of Gochahmadli, Juvarli, Pirahmadli, Musabayli, Chiman, Ishigli, and Dadali in a national address.
The operation to free Fuzuli was marked by intense combat, with the Azerbaijani forces overcoming resistance, forcing a retreat, and defeating the occupying forces. Significant numbers of Armenian military personnel and equipment were neutralized during these operations.
In recognition of these efforts, the Republic of Azerbaijan established the "For the Liberation of Fuzuli" medal. President Ilham Aliyev awarded this honor to military personnel who exhibited bravery and courage in the operations that freed the district.
October 17 has since been designated as Fuzuli City Day by President Aliyev. The relocation of residents to Fuzuli city, as part of the Great Return to the liberated territories, continues.
The Fuzuli district had been under occupation by Armenian forces since August 23, 1993. During this time, the occupiers destroyed much of the city and its villages, committing acts of vandalism against religious, historical, and cultural sites, as well as the environment.
