Accra:The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed annually on October 17, emphasizes the connection between ending poverty, human rights, human dignity, and peace, as noted by the United Nations. The theme for 2026-2028, 'United for Peace and Human Rights,' focuses on 'Safe Homes for All' for the 2026 observance, spotlighting adequate housing as essential for security, participation, and a dignified life.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, over 2.8 billion people globally face some form of housing inadequacy, with those already experiencing poverty and exclusion bearing the heaviest burdens. Without stable and safe housing, access to healthcare, education, employment, and community involvement becomes significantly more challenging.
Housing insecurity encompasses more than just a lack of shelter. Issues such as unsafe, unaffordable, overcrowded, or insecure housing can exacerbate poverty and exclusion, hindering the enjoyment of other human rights. The 2026 concept note advocates for housing policies that prioritize human dignity and rights, focusing on the needs of the people.
The 2026 observance calls for action in three critical areas making safe housing a human-rights priority, involving people experiencing poverty in policy design, and mobilizing resources to ensure safe homes for all. These actions aim to respect, protect, and fulfill the right to adequate housing, engage people experiencing poverty in meaningful policy participation, and strengthen public financing to expand housing access.
This focus builds on the Doha Political Declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in November 2025, which reaffirms the right to an adequate standard of living. It highlights the importance of adequate, safe, accessible, and affordable housing, along with safe drinking water and sanitation, while stressing the need to tackle poverty in all its forms and dimensions.
