In a move designed to bolster digital security, Google has announced a new policy to delete Gmail accounts that have been inactive for at least two years, APA-Economics reports citing BNN.
This policy, which came into effect on December 1, 2023, is part of Google’s wider efforts to protect users by eradicating accounts that may be susceptible due to antiquated or reused passwords and the absence of two-step verification.
The policy has wide-ranging implications as it affects not only emails but also other services associated with the inactive accounts. These services include Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Calendar entries, and photos. However, it’s worth noting that the purge is only applicable to personal accounts, leaving organizational accounts from schools or businesses unaffected. The same applies to accounts with YouTube content.
