Guterres Warns of Temporary Breach of 1.5°C Global Temperature Threshold

Baku: The world is temporarily heading toward exceeding the 1.5°C temperature threshold, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a video message addressed to an international event dedicated to World Environment Day (WED), hosted by Azerbaijan, APA reports. He emphasized the necessity for a transition from conventional energy to renewable energy.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Guterres highlighted the impact of every temperature increase, noting that it causes more damage, particularly for vulnerable population groups. He called for efforts to make temperature rises as small, short-lived, and safe as possible while rapidly bringing temperatures back down. This involves sharply reducing emissions and accelerating a phased and just transition from conventional energy to renewable energy sources. Guterres stated that this is the only sustainable way to reduce costs and ensure genuine energy security. He also stressed the importance of reducing methane emissions as a fast and cost-effective method to limit near-term warming.

Guterres further noted the importance of protecting forests, land, and seas, and supporting communities already experiencing the effects of climate change. He emphasized the need to fulfill climate finance commitments made to developing countries, as this will help save lives, protect livelihoods, and make economies more resilient. Guterres concluded by urging immediate action for the environment and the future.
