Housing Takes Center Stage at WUF13 Ministers’ Meeting

Baku: Housing was emphasized as a primary aspect of social policy in Azerbaijan during the World Urban Forum (WUF13). Deputy National Coordinator Gulshan Rzayeva highlighted the importance of housing in the global agenda at the ministers' meeting titled 'Housing for Social Inclusion and Poverty Eradication,' APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rzayeva acknowledged the varying economic capacities, institutional systems, and social needs of different countries, while maintaining that the universal aim is to provide safe, adequate, and affordable housing. Interactive discussions were underscored for their value in sharing international experiences, developing practical solutions, and promoting inclusive approaches.

Rzayeva also mentioned the role of the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group established by UN-Habitat, noting Azerbaijan's co-chair position alongside Somalia. She described this responsibility as critical for contributing to the global housing agenda.

In Azerbaijan, housing policy is a major focus of social policy, particularly following the liberation of Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur. The country is implementing extensive reconstruction, restoration, and resettlement programs. Rzayeva emphasized that new residential areas contribute to sustainability, stability, and long-term development, and are closely tied to economic development, employment, climate action, and urban resilience.

The discussions at the forum were highlighted as pivotal in addressing poverty reduction, social inclusion, and urban development. Rzayeva concluded by stressing the importance of transitioning from dialogue to actionable steps through strong partnerships and cooperation.
