ATHENS: The Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) pipeline has played a significant role in the transportation of natural gas between Greece and Bulgaria, with substantial volumes being recorded in September 2024. The pipeline, managed by ICGB, facilitated the movement of 896,109.86 MWh of gas from Greece to Bulgaria and 261,053.73 MWh from Bulgaria to Greece through a virtual reverse flow during this month.

According to Trend News Agency, the IGB has shown robust performance over the first nine months of 2024, transporting a total of 7,906,714.14 MWh from Greece to Bulgaria and 1,462,269.93 MWh in the reverse direction. Since its commissioning on October 1, 2022, the interconnector has transported a cumulative volume of 28,319,836.10 MWh from Greece to Bulgaria and 1,583,975.93 MWh in the reverse flow.

The IGB pipeline, which extends 182 kilometers, connects with the Greek national gas transmission system (DESFA S.A.) and the Trans-Adriatic gas pipeline (TAP AG) near Komotini, Greece, and with the Bulgarian
gas transmission system (Bulgartransgaz EAD) near Stara Zagora. The pipeline’s design capacity allows for up to 3 billion cubic meters per year from Greece to Bulgaria, with the potential to increase to 5 billion cubic meters per year if market demand and infrastructure allow, through the addition of a compressor station.
