According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Ilia II was instrumental in nurturing the traditional ties of friendship and cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia. His initiatives transcended national and religious boundaries, earning him respect and admiration from millions.

President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the Georgian people, and the Georgian Orthodox Church. In his message, President Aliyev highlighted Ilia II's contributions and expressed shared grief over this loss, both personally and on behalf of the Azerbaijani people.
