Baku: August 15 marks International Homeless Animals Day, an occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of animals that are lost, abandoned, or placed in shelters that rely entirely on charity and goodwill. According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, organizations are struggling to cope with the situation, desperately trying to raise awareness about the suffering of homeless and abandoned animals. The International Day of Homeless Animals, established in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights, aims to educate people about the abandonment of domestic pets and the important benefits of spaying and neutering them. Domesticated dogs and cats rely on their human families to meet their needs, and when they become homeless, their situation becomes dire. The day seeks to raise awareness and shed light on the needs of homeless animals, while also raising funds for local animal shelters to help meet these needs. Shelters endeavor to care for homeless animals, but face challenges when they lack space, staff, or finances. Unfortunately, when shelters reach capacity, many dogs and cats have to be euthanized due to the inability to provide care and the lack of adoption into families. More than 25 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year due to shelter overcrowding. The International Day of Homeless Animals offers an opportunity for people to unite and assist these animals, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to support and care for them.
