Baku: 'If we want climate action to contribute to peace, we must invest in inclusive, sustainable, and migration-sensitive urban solutions to ensure inclusivity within society,' stated Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), during the opening session titled 'Climate Action Contributing to Peace Through Urban Solutions in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Areas' at the World Urban Forum (WUF13).

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Pope emphasized that cities, while often seen as centers of crises, also hold the potential for solutions. Supporting local governments in managing urban growth can help prevent resource competition from escalating into conflict. The implementation of climate-resilient housing and early warning systems is crucial for communities facing ongoing climate challenges, enabling them to stay safer, more connected, and economically resilient.

Pope further highlighted that climate action aimed at fostering peace goes beyond reducing emissions or adapting to climate impacts. It involves addressing inequalities, building trust, and providing opportunities for stable and dignified living conditions. A critical aspect of this approach is the inclusion of internally displaced persons, migrants, refugees, and host communities in planning and decision-making processes.

The Director General concluded by asserting that when cities are inclusive, sustainable, and resilient, they can transform into spaces not just of shelter but of opportunity, coexistence, and peace.
