Tehran: The Iranian government is set to approve a program related to the ‘snapback’ mechanism, which involves the restoration of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran. This approval is scheduled for October 5, according to a statement by government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani, as reported by Trend News Agency.
According to Trend News Agency, Mohajerani stated that the Iranian government has been actively working to prevent the activation of the ‘snapback’ mechanism by planning strategically in advance. The new program will lead to the development of plans across various government sectors, with each ministry and state agency assigned specific tasks to minimize the impact on citizens.
The preliminary strategy for the program includes discussions on uranium enrichment, aiming for a 60 percent threshold, in conjunction with considerations for the ‘snapback’ protocol. Despite Iran’s efforts, the opposing party did not agree to Iran’s proposals. Initially, the opposing party suggested postponing the ‘snapback’ mechanism for six months, but this was deemed ineffective by the Iranian Foreign Minister.
Amidst Iran’s strategic goals, Iran’s proposal to delay the mechanism’s implementation for 45 days was also rejected by the opposing party. This occurred following the initiation of the ‘snapback’ protocol.
The UN Security Council held a meeting on September 26 to review a draft resolution by Russia and China, which aimed to extend Resolution 2231 and block the ‘snapback’ mechanism. The resolution failed with four votes in favor, nine against, and two abstentions, leading to the reinstatement of resolutions targeting Iran from September 28.
Resolution 2231, adopted by the UN Security Council on July 20, 2015, annulled six previous resolutions against Iran, lifting sanctions related to its nuclear program. Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), if a member state accuses another party of violating the deal, a review process is initiated. If unresolved, the complaint can be escalated to the UN Security Council, which may reactivate international sanctions or even authorize military action against Iran.
