Baku:The strategic importance of the Middle Corridor is on the rise, as container transportation along this route increased by 58% in the first eight months of the year, according to Farid Guliyev, Deputy Chairman of the Board and Chief Commercial Officer of Azer Turk Bank. He addressed this topic at the 'German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026.'
According to Azeri-Press news agency, Guliyev highlighted the European Union's recent announcement to mobilize up to 10 billion euros in public and private investment for the Middle Corridor, aiming to triple trade flows by 2030. However, he emphasized that developing transport routes alone is insufficient. Additional elements such as modern infrastructure, reliable energy supply, digital solutions, and long-term financing are crucial. The banking sector, he noted, plays a vital role in connecting strategic priorities with private and international capital, supporting project financing structuring, and risk assessment.
Guliyev also stressed that the strategic importance of a project does not automatically equate to it being bankable. A clear business model, realistic implementation plan, and proper risk allocation are necessary to attract banks and investors. He cited the 315-megawatt Neftchala Solar Power Plant as an example of successful cooperation, having recently reached financial close with support from three international institutions: the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Asian Development Bank.
He concluded by noting the roles of commercial banks, international financial institutions, development banks, investors, technology companies, and project owners in this process. At Azer Turk Bank, sustainable development and green projects are seen as essential drivers of future economic growth.
