Istanbul: Fenerbahce's five-match unbeaten run in European competition came to an end on Thursday as the Istanbul club lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa in their seventh UEFA Europa League match, APA reports citing Trkiye Today.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, despite dominating large portions of the match through possession and shots on target, and creating two clear scoring chances, the Turkish side failed to convert either opportunity.
One goal was disallowed for both Fenerbahce and Aston Villa during the match. The Premier League side secured the win in the 25th minute when Rogers' cross from the right was redirected to the back post, where Jadon Sancho headed in.
Fenerbahce maintained pressure throughout the match and created multiple chances but struggled to break through. Villa nearly extended their lead in the 42nd minute when Rogers found the net following a chaotic sequence. However, referee Luis Godinho ruled the goal out, as the ball had deflected off him during the buildup.
The Turkish side thought they had equalized in the 75th minute. Mert Muldur delivered a cross that was redirected by Jhon Duran to Kerem Akturkoglu, whose initial shot was saved by goalkeeper Marco Bizot. Akturkoglu converted the rebound, but VAR intervened and disallowed the goal due to an offside infringement.
