Baku: "Various international climate conferences are held around the world," said Nigar Arpadarai, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, during a roundtable titled 'Dialogue with Young Journalists on Climate Issues' organized at the initiative of SOCAR within the framework of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Arpadarai noted that organizing regional climate conferences within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has now become part of the official program. The main purpose of these conferences is to discuss how global decisions adopted at COPs will be implemented in the regions and to identify their execution mechanisms. This is because COP is primarily a platform for global negotiations and decision-making.

Building on the experience of the London conference, Baku held its first and second climate conferences. During this process, support from the private sector, particularly from one of the country's leading companies, was crucial. This support allowed for broader discussions on climate issues beyond the energy sector. The conferences garnered significant interest both domestically and internationally, successfully attracting numerous participants and facilitating the active involvement of state institutions.

Arpadarai highlighted that during COP, 14 initiatives were launched, emphasizing the need for their sustainability and continued development. As a result of two years of successful efforts, the UN has now included the Baku initiative in its program, recognizing the Baku climate conference as an official regional climate conference of the UNFCCC. This outcome strengthens Azerbaijan's active role in the climate agenda, marking a significant achievement for both the country and the region.
