Zandvoort: Lando Norris expressed his concerns about McLaren’s current capabilities, stating that he and the team "don't have the car I need to fight for a championship," even after securing back-to-back victories in the second half of the Formula 1 season.
According to BBC, Norris’ recent triumph at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, following his win in Hungary, showcased his skill but also highlighted the challenges McLaren faces in competing for the championship. The victory raised hopes for a comeback similar to Max Verstappen's previous season's performance against Norris. Last year, after the same race, Norris was significantly behind in points compared to his then-teammate Oscar Piastri and Verstappen. However, Verstappen managed to close the gap and win the title by the end of the season.
Norris’ current position leaves him 83 points behind the leader, Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, despite overtaking him during the race. Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, shares third place in points with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. McLaren's recent improvements, especially in high-speed performance, were instrumental in Norris' victories, yet he remains doubtful about sustaining a championship bid due to the car's deficiencies in slow-speed performance.
Norris noted the car’s strengths in high-speed areas but acknowledged its weaknesses in slow-speed corners, a factor that could hinder their performance in upcoming races like Monza and Azerbaijan, which feature long straights. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella expressed cautious optimism about further improvements, contingent on their performance in Monza.
Norris’ strategy and execution in Zandvoort demonstrated his high level of skill, drawing comparisons to Verstappen's remarkable comeback last year. However, Norris admits the current car presents new challenges, requiring him to adapt and improve continuously.
Stella praised Norris' driving, saying, "Lando is driving and operating at a very high level," and noted the ongoing improvements in Norris' approach since the start of 2025. Stella highlighted the collaborative effort to enhance Norris' performance, which is now also being applied to Piastri.
Norris remains realistic about his prospects, emphasizing the need to focus on each race individually. He acknowledged McLaren's progress but stressed the necessity for further improvements to contend for the championship. Meanwhile, Mercedes faces its own challenges, with Antonelli anticipating a grid penalty at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix and the team's next upgrade not expected until the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
