Washington: One year has passed since the signing of the Washington Declaration, APA reports. On August 8, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, US President Donald Trump, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed the Joint Declaration on the results of the meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Joint Declaration saw the President of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, and US President Donald Trump witnessing the initialing of the agreed text of the 'Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia' by the foreign ministers of the parties. The leaders recognized the need to continue taking additional measures for the signing and eventual ratification of the Agreement and stressed the importance of ensuring and strengthening peace between the countries.
The President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia also witnessed the signing of a joint appeal to the OSCE by their respective Foreign Ministers on the closure of the Minsk Process and its related structures of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). They called on all OSCE participating States to adopt this decision, marking a significant shift in the diplomatic landscape of the region.
Efforts to open communications between the two countries were reaffirmed to ensure domestic, bilateral, and international transport, promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. This included unhindered connectivity between the main part of Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, as well as mutual benefits for Armenia in international and domestic connections. The Joint Declaration also noted Armenia's cooperation with the United States and other parties to define a framework for the 'Trump Roadmap for International Peace and Prosperity' (TRIPP) connectivity project.
Both leaders expressed their determination to embark on a future free from the past conflict, in accordance with the UN Charter and the 1991 Almaty Declaration. They emphasized that conditions were finally in place for building good-neighborly relations based on the inviolability of international borders and the inadmissibility of the use of force for territorial acquisition. The leaders rejected any attempt at retaliation, committing to a peaceful future.
The leaders expressed confidence that the Washington Summit would provide a solid foundation for promoting mutual respect and peace in the region. They also extended their gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his hospitality and contribution to normalizing bilateral relations during the Washington Summit.
Following the joint appeal to the OSCE Chairmanship, the closure of the Minsk Process and its related structures was completed on November 30, 2025, as per the decision of the OSCE Ministerial Council adopted on September 1, 2025.
