Baku: OPEC Secretariat will make its first appearance with a dedicated pavilion at the upcoming COP29 climate change conference in Baku, as announced by Haitham Al Ghais, the OPEC Secretary General.

According to Trend News Agency, Al Ghais discussed the organization’s plans during the 26th Coordination Meeting on Climate Change held in Vienna. He emphasized the importance of ongoing engagement in climate-related discussions and the need for close communication with delegations from OPEC and the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) countries. The pavilion will serve as a platform for OPEC to articulate its perspectives on crucial issues such as emission reductions, energy security, and the importance of oil in ensuring sustainable energy access globally.

In his address, Al Ghais also praised the proactive and inclusive approach of the incoming COP29 presidency, which was also present at the Vienna meeting. He underscored the significance of collaborative efforts in addressing the challenges posed by climate chan
ge.

This year, the city of Baku is set to host COP29 in November, following its selection during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11 last year. The event is expected to draw around 70-80,000 international visitors to Azerbaijan, spotlighting Baku as a focal point for global environmental discussions. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was established in 1992 to combat harmful human impacts on the climate system. The annual conference rotates among the member countries, unless decided otherwise, with the inaugural session held in Berlin, Germany in 1995.
