Baku: Over 200 million people are at risk of becoming climate migrants in the next 25 years. Raimonds Vejonis, Latvia’s former president from 2015 to 2019, issued this warning on the opening day of the 2nd Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW), as reported by APA-Economics.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Vejonis emphasized that these numbers represent more than mere statistics. They encompass families, farmers, children, and entire communities that could be devastated by climate change. He highlighted that in 2022 alone, climate disasters displaced over 32 million people. This equates to 60,000 individuals-comprising women, men, and children-being forced to leave their homes daily due to storms, floods, and droughts.

Vejonis warned that without immediate action, climate-related forced migration could emerge as one of the most significant threats to global stability this century. The potential scale of displacement underscores the urgency of addressing climate change to prevent widespread human suffering and social disruption.
