New york: Oscar Temaru, President of Tavini Huiraatira, which is fighting for the independence of Maohi Nui (French Polynesia), has prepared a statement on the full sovereignty of his country, APA reports. This statement is set to be presented in October in New York during the meetings of the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly on Political Affairs and Decolonization.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Oscar Temaru emphasized that ending Maohi Nui's political and institutional dependence on France is among the main objectives. He aims to enable the people of Maohi Nui to freely determine their own future and begin the process of building a sovereign state. Temaru believes that the issue of the territory's decolonization has become part of the international agenda and activities in this direction should continue within the framework of the UN.

The information released by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) highlighted that French Polynesia was re-inscribed on the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories by a decision of the UN General Assembly in 2013. In addition to presenting the statement, Oscar Temaru plans to launch a petition to demonstrate public support for Maohi Nui's independence. This petition aims to showcase the political will of the population to the international community.

The organization supports the Maohi Nui people's right to self-determination and the decolonization process on international platforms. It was also reported that a document on cooperation between the Baku Initiative Group and the Tavini Huiraatira Party was signed at the UN Office in Vienna on April 26, 2024. The BIG's information further emphasized the severe consequences for the local population and the environment due to nuclear tests conducted by France in French Polynesia in previous years.
