President Aliyev Welcomes New Algerian Ambassador, Discusses Bilateral Cooperation

BAKU—On September 17, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan received the credentials of the newly appointed Algerian Ambassador, Zakia Ighil, signaling a continuation of robust diplomatic engagement between Azerbaijan and Algeria.

According to Trend News Agency, during the credential ceremony, President Aliyev and Ambassador Ighil engaged in discussions that underscored the mutual commitment to deepening ties across political, economic, and energy sectors. President Aliyev praised the ongoing bilateral relations, highlighting the significance of the cooperation fostered by his visit to Algeria in 2022. He expressed his appreciation for the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s greetings and his reflections on their shared diplomatic priorities.

Ambassador Ighil conveyed President Tebboune’s gratitude for President Aliyev’s congratulatory message on his electoral victory and reiterated Algeria’s desire to further strengthen their partnership. She emphasized her dedication to expanding bilateral relations during her tenure in Azerbaijan.

The talks also covered the importance of collaboration within international forums such as the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement. President Aliyev noted Azerbaijan’s focus on efficiency in international engagements and thanked Algeria for its support during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement.

In discussing global challenges, both figures acknowledged the need to uphold principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the fight against neocolonialism. They also touched upon energy cooperation, with both nations being significant natural gas suppliers to Europe and active members within the OPEC+ framework.

The ambassador additionally lauded Azerbaijan for its upcoming hosting of COP29, expressing confidence in the successful management of this significant global event.
