According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Azerbaijani cultural community has suffered a significant loss with the passing of Nariman Alimammad oglu Hasanzada, a prominent figure in modern Azerbaijani literature. Hasanzada, a laureate of the Heydar Aliyev Prize and a recipient of the President's personal pension, passed away on August 1, 2026, at the age of 96. His lifetime achievements include being honored as a People's Poet and an Honored Artist.
Nariman Hasanzada was born on February 2, 1931, in Poylu, Gazakh district. He pursued his education in language and literature at the Hasan bey Zardabi Ganja State Pedagogical Institute and furthered his studies at the M. Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow. He completed his postgraduate studies at Baku State University, where he defended his dissertation and earned a Candidate of Sciences degree.
Hasanzada's professional journey began in 1962, with roles at the 'Azerbaijani Youth' newspaper, 'Azerbaijan' magazine, and the Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee. From 1978 to 1991, he served as the editor-in-chief of the 'Literature and Art' newspaper, enhancing its influence in literary and social circles.
Between 1991 and 2001, Hasanzada was the First Deputy Minister of Press and Information of the Republic of Azerbaijan and took on the role of Acting Minister. From 2001 until his passing, he chaired the Department of Humanities at the National Aviation Academy.
Nariman Hasanzada is celebrated for his unique style in Azerbaijani literature, contributing significantly to the national poetic treasury. His works, which emphasize love for the homeland, national freedom, traditional values, and spiritual enlightenment, have kept him at the forefront of the literary scene. His poetry and verse plays, which revive historical events and personalities with deep patriotism, have been staged in theaters and are widely celebrated.
In addition to his literary contributions, Hasanzada played an active role in socio-political and cultural activities. He served as Director of the Azerbaijan branch of the USSR Literature Fund and as a Deputy in local councils and the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Nariman Hasanzada's dedication to Azerbaijani culture and literature earned him prestigious state awards, including the "Shohrat," "Sharaf," and "Istiglal" orders, and in 2026, he was awarded the "Heydar Aliyev" order.
