Baku: Foreigners who are detained, serving fixed-term imprisonment, or sentenced to life imprisonment in Azerbaijan will soon receive medical services under compulsory health insurance. This development, however, excludes those serving in settlement-type penitentiary institutions, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the proposed amendments to the Law on Health Insurance were discussed at a recent meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Healthcare. The draft amendments aim to ensure that medical examinations of detainees, prisoners serving fixed-term sentences, and life convicts are conducted within the framework of compulsory health insurance.

The proposed changes include incorporating detainees, fixed-term prisoners, and life convicts into Article 15-2.1 of the law, while simultaneously removing this category from Article 15-2.3. The amendments also take into account that individuals within this category may have the status of foreign nationals or stateless persons.

Given the unique nature of providing medical services to these individuals, a new Article 15-17.2.3-3 is being added to the Law. This addition will establish the conditions under which medical services are to be provided to these individuals within the Benefits Package.
