Proposal Made to Establish Bone Marrow Donor Bank in Azerbaijan

Baku: A proposal has been made to establish a bone marrow donor bank in Azerbaijan, APA reports. The proposal was voiced by MP Soltan Mammadov during the discussion of the draft law "On the Execution of the State Budget of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025" at today's plenary session of the Milli Majlis.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Soltan Mammadov highlighted the successful implementation of the compulsory health insurance system in Azerbaijan, which is part of the country's socially oriented state policy. He emphasized the importance of expanding the service package within this system, improving public access to medical services, and enhancing the quality of healthcare services. Mammadov also pointed out the necessity of emphasizing preventive measures and strengthening the primary healthcare system. He noted that, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, spending in these areas has increased significantly in both developed and developing countries.

The MP commended the allocation of AZN 5 million for bone marrow transplantation operations as part of the 2025 state budget. He stressed the importance of this support for children suffering from hereditary blood diseases. Mammadov mentioned that while bone marrow transplantation operations have been carried out abroad in recent years, efforts have also been made to perform these procedures domestically. He advocated for expanding human resources capacity and establishing a bone marrow donor bank to facilitate more local operations and eliminate the current limitation of relying solely on first-degree relative donors.

Mammadov further suggested continuing efforts to allocate additional financial resources for treating hereditary and rare childhood diseases, building on the positive outcomes of previous state programs in the healthcare sector.
