Baku: Azerbaijan is playing a significant role in global urbanization and sustainable development efforts, according to Ramil Isgandarli, Chairman of the Board of the National NGO Forum. He made these remarks during the opening session of the Assembly of Civil Initiatives and Civil Society Organizations, which was part of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Isgandarli emphasized the role of the National NGO Forum as an umbrella organization that unites civil society institutions in Azerbaijan. These institutions focus on various fields, including sustainable development, climate action, social inclusivity, urban development, and youth participation. He highlighted that Azerbaijan has mechanisms in place for citizen participation in state policy, governed by the Law on Public Participation. This legislation ensures that stakeholders and local communities are informed and consulted during urban planning processes.
Isgandarli also pointed out the increasing importance of participatory urban planning approaches in Azerbaijan. He noted that during the preparation and discussion of master plans for cities such as Baku, Ganja, and Aghdam, as well as other liberated territories, efforts were made to involve local communities and study public opinion. These steps were taken with the collaboration of international experts, reflecting a commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban development.
