Tashkent: The third meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan took place in Tashkent, with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan. The meeting underscored the strong bilateral relations and the strategic alliance between the two nations.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the event commenced with the screening of a film highlighting the friendship, trade, and investment cooperation between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. President Mirziyoyev emphasized the spiritual and historical connections between the two countries and congratulated President Aliyev on Azerbaijan's economic development and international standing. The meeting aimed to further elevate bilateral relations marked by the signing of a Treaty on Eternal Friendship and significant growth in mutual trade and joint projects.
The discussions covered a variety of key areas for cooperation. First, the presidents agreed to enhance coordination in foreign affairs to promote shared interests on international platforms. They also aimed to boost parliamentary, governmental, and regional ties. The immediate goal is to increase trade turnover to $1 billion, supported by a comprehensive program outlining concrete steps.
Industrial cooperation was a focal point, with ongoing projects in various sectors such as energy, finance, and agriculture. The leaders agreed to utilize a joint investment fund, starting with $500 million, to support these initiatives. Transport ministers were tasked with developing a joint fleet in the Caspian Sea and establishing a dedicated corridor between the two countries.
Cultural ties were also prioritized, with plans to open a new university building and park in Tashkent, and proposals for joint films and cultural exchanges. The presidents supported the idea of a second forum for university rectors in Azerbaijan and suggested organizing a major sporting event to strengthen youth engagement.
The summit concluded with a strong commitment to regional consolidation and expanding the geoeconomic potential of the regions. Both leaders expressed their dedication to implementing major projects and fostering a unified macro-region with potential for joint development.
