Baku: On September 7, the second lunar eclipse of 2025 will occur, The Department of Astrophysics at the Faculty of Physics of Baku State University told APA. This is a total lunar eclipse, sometimes called a ‘Blood Moon.’
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, a total lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight line, causing Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon, which then appears reddish. This phenomenon occurs due to the refraction and scattering of sunlight in Earth’s atmosphere, allowing red and orange rays to illuminate the Moon’s surface. The effect can appear more pronounced when the Moon is on the horizon, as the sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere colors it red, enhancing the already reddish hue of the Moon on the horizon.
Earth’s shadow is composed of two parts: the penumbra and the umbra. The penumbral lunar eclipse, which is challenging to detect with the naked eye, starts when the Moon enters the penumbra. A visible eclipse begins when the Moon enters Earth’s umbra.
The penumbral lunar eclipse will commence at 19:28:21 on September 7, followed by the partial eclipse at 20:27:02, and the total eclipse at 21:30:41. The maximum eclipse will occur at 22:11:47. The total eclipse will conclude at 22:52:47, the partial eclipse at 23:56:26, and the penumbral eclipse will end at 00:55:00. The total eclipse duration will be 82 minutes.
The second total lunar eclipse of 2025 will be visible across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In Azerbaijan, the total lunar eclipse can be observed from evening until midnight.
