Washington: In an interview with the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC), Joseph Shumunov, Non-Resident Research Fellow at the Topchubashov Center, discussed the Trump administration's growing focus on Azerbaijan as a pivotal player in connectivity, energy, and diplomatic developments in Eurasia. He emphasized the importance of the memorandum extending the waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, which underscores Azerbaijan's rising profile as an energy supplier and transit hub, as well as its role in the Middle Corridor.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Shumunov highlighted the significance of President Trump's personal diplomacy, noting that Trump's handwritten note to President Aliyev, "You are great," serves as a public endorsement of Aliyev's leadership and the strengthening ties between the U.S. and Azerbaijan. This gesture reflects Trump's distinctive approach to diplomacy, where personal relationships and symbolic gestures play a crucial role.
Shumunov also addressed the contentious nature of Section 907 in U.S.-Azerbaijan relations, noting that while Trump's gesture does not resolve the issue entirely, it marks a shift from previous policies and aligns with the Trump administration's broader strategy toward Azerbaijan. Since 2025, the administration has brokered a peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia, announced the TRIPP corridor, and signed a strategic partnership with Baku, indicating a more robust bilateral relationship.
Furthermore, Shumunov elaborated on Azerbaijan's growing importance as an energy supplier and transit hub, noting that its strategic location and relationships with countries like Trkiye, Russia, and China make it an essential partner for the U.S. in maintaining competitiveness in Eurasia. Azerbaijan's centrality in trade, energy, and transit has positioned it as a key ally for Washington.
The expert concluded by highlighting Azerbaijan's active role in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process, which has strengthened its relationship with the Trump administration. President Aliyev's commitment to peace under U.S. supervision has demonstrated Azerbaijan's willingness to cooperate with the United States and embrace its leadership in the evolving international order. This newfound trust has further solidified the U.S.-Azerbaijan partnership.
