Baku:The United Kingdom is keen to enhance investment ties with Azerbaijan, aiming for a two-way expansion, according to UK Minister of State for Trade Lord Anas Sarwar. He highlighted this interest during his address at the 8th meeting of the Azerbaijan-UK Joint Intergovernmental Commission.
According to the Azeri-Press news agency, Lord Sarwar identified key areas of the strategic partnership, which include defense, innovation, and economic growth, alongside energy, education, infrastructure, and security. He mentioned that UK defense official Lord Coaker recently visited Baku to discuss developments in defense and security cooperation.
The minister emphasized the focus on economic relations, with efforts directed at supporting economic growth, promoting innovation, and attracting investments in both countries. British companies have significantly contributed to Azerbaijan's economic development, particularly in energy resources, with BP being a major player in this sector.
Lord Sarwar stated that the United Kingdom remains the largest foreign investor in Azerbaijan and noted an increase in mutual investments. He described this as an ideal bilateral economic relationship, where British and Azerbaijani companies invest and succeed in each other's markets.
Additionally, the minister highlighted the need to expand cooperation beyond traditional areas. He cited British design firm Chapman Taylor's projects in Azerbaijan, Anglo Asian Mining's long-term presence, and Entrust's role in the digital and cybersecurity sector.
Lord Sarwar concluded by emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties not only at the governmental and business levels but also between the cities and people of both nations.
