UN Human Rights Council Adopts Azerbaijan-Sponsored Resolution on Landmines

Geneva:The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution focused on the impact of anti-personnel mines on human rights. This resolution, titled "The impact of anti-personnel mines on the full enjoyment of all human rights: Strengthening victim assistance," was co-sponsored and actively promoted by Azerbaijan during the 63rd Session held in Geneva.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the resolution was co-sponsored by 70 states and was adopted without a vote. Azerbaijan played a significant role in prioritizing this issue by organizing a public policy dialogue and cosponsoring a side event on the topic.

As one of the countries most affected by landmines, Azerbaijan continues to face significant challenges due to anti-personnel mines and unexploded ordnances, which have severe implications for human rights. The resolution emphasizes victim assistance, a critical concern for Azerbaijan.

Mine action is identified as essential for sustainable peace and post-conflict recovery, aiding in the return of internally displaced persons, rebuilding affected areas, and supporting socio-economic development. The resolution also highlights the connection between mine action, peace, and the Sustainable Development Goals, and its role in adapting to climate-related risks.

The Human Rights Council has called on UN Member States to increase funding for mine clearance and victim assistance, encouraging the use of alternative funding sources and public-private partnerships. Azerbaijan emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in addressing the mine threat and values the role of mine action in promoting human rights and sustainable peace.
