Washington: Within the framework of the Trump administration’s policy, the role of the United States is to help stabilize peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, John Herbst, Director of the Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council, told APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the expert noted that there are serious disagreements regarding the corridor passing through Armenian territory and said that the U.S. would provide assistance on this issue. Herbst highlighted that Azerbaijan seeks extraterritorial rights on Armenian territory. However, if the United States assumes responsibility for managing the corridor, this dispute may diminish. In that scenario, Armenia would not have to grant extraterritoriality to Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan would not need to insist on this condition to secure its interests. Washington’s involvement could potentially neutralize this contentious point.

Herbst also discussed the importance of accelerating the construction of roads in Armenian territory, asserting that deliberate delays would be unlikely. While delays are possible, he mentioned that Trump is known for acting quickly on important matters. Since returning to the White House, Trump has moved swiftly on various issues, and his experience in construction could mean he personally oversees and expedites the process.

Regarding the United States’ potential contribution as a foreign partner to the construction of a railway toward Nakhchivan, the expert expressed that this project would likely receive backing from the Trump administration. Trump values his relationship with President Aliyev, making this issue a priority for Baku. It is natural for Trump to consider these relationships when making decisions.

Herbst addressed concerns about the possibility of the ‘Trump route’ not being completed before the end of Trump’s presidential term. He expressed confidence that even if this occurs, the new administration would not abandon the project. Herbst emphasized that if Trump deems something important, he acts decisively, which could have a significant impact. He believes there is a genuine chance for these projects to be completed during Trump’s time in office and cautioned that abandoning progress in the South Caucasus would be a mistake for any future administration.
