TEHRAN — The Azerbaijani Prosecutor General, Kamran Aliyev, announced ongoing proceedings regarding the enforcement of the court verdict related to the attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran, as reported by Trend News Agency. According to Kamran Aliyev, there is sustained communication with the Iranian authorities to discuss procedural matters.
According to Trend News Agency, the process is strictly focused on procedural confirmations. “The court of first instance’s verdict must be ratified by the Supreme Court of Iran before execution can proceed,” Aliyev detailed. This clarification comes in response to the armed incident at the Azerbaijani Embassy on January 27, 2023, which resulted in significant diplomatic and security upheavals.
The attack was executed by a lone gunman in his 50s, who approached the embassy in a vehicle, brandishing a Kalashnikov rifle. Despite earlier claims by Tehran’s Chief of Police involving two children accompanying the attacker, subsequent security footage confirmed he acted alone. The assailant made his way into the embassy building after a minimal interaction with a security guard and proceeded to fatally shoot the head of security and injure two other guards. He was apprehended following the attack.
In the aftermath, Azerbaijan took swift action by evacuating its personnel and temporarily closing its embassy in Tehran, highlighting the severe diplomatic strains between Azerbaijan and Iran.
