WHO Director-General Responds to Accusations of Mishandling COVID at Global Baku Forum

Baku: The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has addressed accusations of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Tedros spoke during the “Reconsidering Multilateralism for a Multipolar World” panel at the 12th Global Baku Forum, which focused on “Rethinking the World Order: Turning Challenges into Opportunities.”

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Dr. Tedros emphasized the WHO’s efforts to diversify its donor base starting in 2017, stating the organization’s desire not to rely solely on a single donor. He highlighted the importance of the United States’ continued involvement and support in order to enhance donor diversity. Dr. Tedros asserted that the WHO has strived to effectively manage the COVID-19 crisis and has identified necessary measures based on lessons learned from the pandemic.

Dr. Tedros further explained the organization’s commitment to its values, noting that during President Trump’s first term, the WHO declined certain proposals from Russia and China, maintaining a clear stance against some of China’s ideas. He warned that if the United States were to withdraw from the organization, it would result in a 20% reduction in the WHO’s budget. Dr. Tedros affirmed that the WHO is actively cooperating with the US and other countries to advocate for the United States’ continued participation in the organization.
