Zidane’s shadow looming over Pochettino again

The shadow of Zinedine Zidane is once again looming over Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino as some of those in charge of the French club would like to hire the former Real Madrid boss before the end of the season, according to Marca.

With just two weeks until a season-defining Champions League duel against Real Madrid, this has become an unwelcome distraction for Pochettino and the Parisians.

As reported by MARCA, Zidane is in line to take over at PSG from June 30, but there is movement within the club to bring him in sooner. The problem, however, appears to be Zidane’s reluctance to have to take charge of the side against Los Blancos, according to Telefoot.

PSG may have a healthy lead over Nice at the top of Ligue 1, but their elimination from the Coup de France – at the hands of Nice, no less – has stirred up festering grievances in the dressing room.

All this, coupled with the uncertainty over the coach’s future, means that the collective mindset is not the best ahead of the Champions League last 16 clash with Real Madrid in two weeks’ time.

Everyone knows Pochettino’s days are numbered and he certainly won’t be in Paris after this season, but there are still important games to take care of and he hasn’t been able to get the best out of the embarrassment of riches in the PSG squad.

Lionel Messi is yet to fully settle, while Sergio Ramos’ bad luck with injuries hasn’t helped either. The squad doesn’t lack talent, but it has shown other deficiencies and seems short of confidence at the worst possible moment.

Only winning the Champions League would make this a truly successful season, but to do that they must overcome their own issues and get past Real Madrid, who have become their nemesis in recent times.
