Baku: An attempt to smuggle a substantial quantity of gold into Azerbaijan has been successfully foiled by the State Customs Committee, which continues to combat the illegal entry of precious metals and stones into the country. Despite ongoing efforts to hold offenders accountable, some individuals persist in these illegal activities, as reported to APA-Economics by the Committee.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the thwarting of this particular smuggling attempt occurred during an operation at the Main Customs Department for Air Transport. The investigation began after intelligence was received, prompting customs officials to inspect the hand luggage of an Azerbaijani citizen on a flight from Istanbul to Baku. In the customs control zone of ‘Terminal 1’, a large quantity of undeclared gold products, amounting to 10 kilograms 883.82 grams and valued at 2 million 440 thousand 344 manats, was discovered. Additionally, a 3-carat diamond weighing 0.60 grams was found concealed in the suitcase.

The State Customs Committee has initiated a criminal case under Article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The investigation revealed that the gold products were initially transported from Dubai to Istanbul and then to Baku by another individual to obscure the trail.

Efforts are ongoing to identify and prosecute all individuals involved in this smuggling operation, including those who facilitated the conditions for the incident. The State Customs Committee has reiterated its commitment to preventing such illegal actions and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
