AFFA Refutes Claims of Backing Russia’s Return to European Football Tournaments

Tbilisi: The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) has denied reports alleging Azerbaijan’s support for Russia’s reintegration into European football competitions.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Russian media previously reported Azerbaijan’s supposed backing at a UEFA meeting held in Albania, where the topic of allowing Russian national teams and clubs back into international tournaments was discussed.

The reports indicated that alongside Azerbaijan, countries like Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, and Hungary also favored Russia’s return. In contrast, nations including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, as well as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Iceland, opposed the reintegration of Russian teams.

However, AFFA clarified to Apasport that these reports are unfounded. They stated that no inquiry on this matter was received from UEFA, and no Azerbaijani representatives were present at the meeting. AFFA emphasized that it does not have a member on the UEFA Executive Committee and thus lacks the authority to engage in such decisions.
