Armenian Citizens Continue Appeals Process in Baku Court

Baku: On June 23, the Baku Court of Appeal continued its hearings on the appeals filed by several citizens of the Republic of Armenia, including Araik Harutyunyan, Arkady Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, David Ishkhanyan, David Babayan, and Levon Mnatsakanyan. These individuals were previously convicted by the Baku Military Court for crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, and other offenses related to Armenia's military aggression against Azerbaijan.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the court session was presided over by Judge Elmar Rahimov, with judges Emin Mehdiyev and Mehriban Garayeva also participating, and Ali Mammadov serving as the reserve judge. To ensure fair proceedings, interpreters fluent in Armenian and Russian were provided for each defendant, along with legal representation.

Representatives of the victims and state prosecutors were also present, including Abbas Abbasli, who heads the Department for Maintaining State Prosecution at the General Prosecutor's Office, alongside prosecutors Anar Alakbarov and Sevinj Gasimova from the same department.

During the session, Levon Mnatsakanyan continued his defense, requesting the court to consider the presented video materials and facts. He maintained his innocence against the charges. Erik Kazaryan's lawyer then addressed the court, supporting his client's appeal. Kazaryan also declared his innocence.

Following this, Garik Martirosyan's defense requested a reduction of charges, while Martirosyan himself stated he does not plead guilty. Levon Balayan's lawyer argued for an acquittal, a position Balayan agreed with. Gurgen Stepanyan's defense also sought to overturn his conviction, aligning with Stepanyan's claim of innocence.

The court has scheduled the next session for June 30. As per the February 5, 2026, verdict of the Baku Military Court, several defendants received life sentences, while others received varying terms of imprisonment ranging from 15 to 20 years.
