Azerbaijan and ICAO Collaborate on Aktau Plane Crash Investigation

Paris: A meeting took place involving a delegation from Azerbaijan, led by Elmin Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, along with Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and Nicolas Rallo, Regional Director of ICAO’s European and North Atlantic Office. The discussions focused on the ongoing investigation of the ‘Azerbaijan Airlines’ Embraer 190 aircraft crash on December 25, 2024, as reported by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport to APA-Economics.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the meeting also addressed various aspects of aviation safety, flight security, and the training of aviation specialists. The discussions included enhancing the knowledge and skills of aviation professionals and measures to improve the regulatory activities in Azerbaijan in line with international standards. Plans to develop bilateral cooperation were also part of the agenda.

ICAO representatives stressed the importance of investigating aviation accidents and highlighted the need for Azerbaijan’s support in this domain. The parties emphasized the significance of conducting civil aviation flights in strict adherence to safety standards.

The meeting underscored the need for implementing training programs to enhance regulation in aviation and flight safety, ensuring effective state supervision and compliance with ICAO standards. Additionally, there was an agreement to focus on partnership in capacity building through experts appointed under ICAO’s technical assistance programs. The continuation of bilateral cooperation through ICAO’s Capacity Development and Implementation (CDI) Bureau was also decided.

The parties agreed to broaden cooperation between ICAO, the State Civil Aviation Agency, and operators in Azerbaijan across various sectors. The Azerbaijani side reaffirmed its commitment to supporting joint efforts with ICAO in the global implementation of international standards in flight safety, aviation security, and environmental protection.
