Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan Collaborate on Caspian Sea Challenges

Astana: In a significant step towards addressing the environmental challenges posed by the declining water levels of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have initiated a collaborative effort through the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan Working Group. The inaugural meeting of this group took place in Astana on April 24, marking the beginning of joint initiatives aimed at understanding and mitigating the effects of the sea's level decline.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the meeting was attended by high-level delegations led by Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Rauf Hajiyev, and Kazakhstan's Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mansur Oshurbayev. The discussions centered around the contributing factors to the Caspian Sea's decline, which include both climatic and human-induced elements. Emphasis was placed on the potential impacts these changes could have on local ecosystems and coastal regions, highlighting the urgency of enhanced coordination between the two nations.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on the importance of conducting joint research and expanding data exchange. The participants outlined priorities for future cooperation that aim to develop effective adaptation measures. Both sides are committed to continuing their collaborative efforts, with the next meeting scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan in the second half of 2027.
