Baku: A significant step towards harnessing renewable energy was taken by the Republic of Azerbaijan as Prime Minister Ali Asadov signed a decision to allocate 711.4 square kilometers in Azerbaijan's sector of the Caspian Sea for the development of renewable energy sources. This designated area is set to become a hub for offshore wind power projects, marking a strategic move to capitalize on the country's renewable energy potential.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan will be responsible for selecting an electricity producer for the newly designated renewable energy zone. This selection process will adhere to directives outlined in the Presidential Decree issued on 2 August 2023. The construction of wind power plants within this zone will require permits, which must comply with the existing legislation and the stipulations of Article 6.7 of the relevant law.

The State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of Azerbaijan is tasked with informing the Cabinet of Ministers within three days of either issuing a construction permit or upon the expiry of the deadline if a permit is not granted. Additionally, oversight of the decision's implementation has been assigned to the Department of Agriculture and Ecology within the Cabinet of Ministers' Office.
