Baku: Azerbaijan is joining the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM). The draft law concerning Azerbaijan's accession to this significant international convention was placed on the agenda during the Milli Majlis session on July 10.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the convention, which was originally signed in London on February 13, 2004, aims to address the global environmental concerns associated with the transfer of aquatic invasive species through ships' ballast water and sediments. Azerbaijan's legislative body, the Milli Majlis, has approved the draft law in its first reading, marking a crucial step towards the country's full participation in the convention.

The BWM convention represents an international effort to mitigate the impact of ships' ballast water on marine ecosystems. By joining the convention, Azerbaijan commits to implementing measures that ensure ballast water is managed and treated effectively to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens. The move is seen as part of Azerbaijan's broader commitment to environmental protection and sustainable maritime practices.
