Azerbaijan Plans to Relocate Nasimi’s Grave from Syria

Baku: The grave of the esteemed poet and thinker Imadaddin Nasimi, currently located in Syria, may soon be relocated to Azerbaijan, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Azerbaijani government has expressed interest in bringing Nasimi’s resting place back to his homeland. Initial discussions with Syrian officials have commenced, and Syria has been apprised of Azerbaijan’s intentions.

Nasimi’s grave is situated in Aleppo, a city that has witnessed significant destruction due to ongoing military conflicts. The site of Nasimi’s resting place has suffered damage amidst the turmoil. Historical records indicate that the grave was maintained during a visit by Heydar Aliyev, then First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, to Syria in 1970.

Heydar Aliyev later revisited the grave, highlighting its cultural importance. In 2019, Azerbaijan commemorated the 650th anniversary of Imadaddin Nasimi with state-level celebrations, underscoring the continued reverence for the poet’s legacy.
