Azerbaijan Plans Two-Year Overhaul of Baku’s Rainwater Drainage System

Baku: Azerbaijan is set to embark on a comprehensive modernization of the rainwater drainage system in its capital, Baku, over the next two years. Eldar Azizov, Head of the Baku City Executive Power, addressed the pressing need for this overhaul following last year’s severe natural disaster, as reported by APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the United Water Supply Service of Big Cities, which operates under the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan, has already initiated the project planning process for this critical infrastructure upgrade. Preliminary assessments indicate that the program’s implementation will span at least two years.

Azizov highlighted that such infrastructural challenges are not unique to Azerbaijan, noting that even developed countries face similar issues. He explained that Baku’s existing engineering and communication systems were initially designed for smaller residential areas, which have since been replaced by multi-story residential complexes. The current infrastructure is thus inadequate to manage the increased water volume, and residents must remain patient as solutions are developed over the next two years.
